About New Collection
John Eveleigh’s career is based in two countries, England and Australia and takes in two activities, the artistic and administrative, one supporting and informing the other. He studied at Canterbury College of Art and was the Head of Foundation Studies in Folkestone, later the highly successful Arts Director of the New Metropole Arts Centre 1971-1983 with many interesting and prestigious exhibitions to his credit. John is a man of strong and decided opinions in the arts generally and he was very successful also in Australia as Senior Lecturer in Painting at the University of Woollongong. His enduring legacy was his expertise and advice in acquiring 425 works for the University Long Gallery. He also became Honorary Curator of the Permanent Collection of the James Cook Collection, North Queensland when 100 works were acquired and established Postgraduate studies in the Department of Arts and Design there.
All this went hand in hand with an active career as and artist. His beautiful and colourful landscapes and portraits have been widely shown - the Royal Academy, Royal Watercolour Society, Piccadilly Gallery, Roland Browse Delbanco, Wye College, Nevill Gallery, Wildenstein, Agnews, Mall Gallery, New Grafton and numerous venues in Australia. They figure in collections all over the world, Africa, Australia, USA, Canada, Sydney University, KCC, Camberwell Borough Council, Hertford County Council, J. Walter Thompson, Marks & Spencer and many others. In this exhibition he is concentrating on scenes of Kent.
Another aspect of his activities has been to produce videos of conversations with artists and musicians, which will be valuable archive material for the future.
