About New Collection
Michael Calver was born in Braintree in l943, moving to Cornwall, South Wales and finally to Kent where he continued his education at Kings School,Rochester, studying drawing and painting together with the history of the visual artsand architecture.
Following schooling, at eighteen Michael trained as a Quantity Surveyor which meant he was able to maintain a practical interest in architecture. At the same time he continued to sketch, draw and paint on a regular basis, taking a more serious approach in recent years to painting. Among the painters who have influenced his work are Picasso and Hockney for their exceptional draughtmanship which he considers an
important ingredient together with vision and the use of colour.
Michael has worked in various media including oils, acrylic and watercolour and, during recent years, he has concentrated on a clear, distinctive and unambiguous style utilizing a mixed media of pen and ink with watercolour washes, painting in Kentand Provence. He has to an extent abandoned landscapes and architectural subjects to concentrate on interiors, still life and figurative painting. “I am attempting to present my pictures with an equality between the subject and its surroundings. All elements of a picture have their part to play in a composition and are linked by their mere presence. I achieve this by `overlapping` objects on different planes and the use of colour andtextures to emphasize a coming together of the various elements. I consider that I am a realist painter employing familiar subjects, utilizing line and colour to structure my pictures.”
